It was a full day family event on Vijayadashami which was the fifth Durga Pooja celebration in Beijing by the Indian community. They expressed great satisfaction that Durgotsav this year is celebrated with pomp and grandeur. Pooja organisers said this was another exceptional year because many of the active members of the group are either stuck outside China because of pandemic restrictions or have left China. SVCC Director, Rajashree Behera commended the efforts of the Indian community members who came together to organize the pooja despite all the odds resulting from the tight COVID-19 restrictions in Beijing. The core message of this festival, the victory of good over evil is timeless and ever relevant, he added. Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Rawat commended the efforts of Indian community members to continue organizing different festivals to spread the essence of India. A joyous Indian Community led by ‘The Beijing Bongs’ – a community group, gathered from various parts of Beijing to get soaked in the pious aura of goddess Durga with traditional pooja amid the beats of ‘Dhaak’. But it is by no means dull, and can be a refreshing experience for lovers of good cinema. In China, Durga Pooja was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety at the Swami Vivekanand Cultural Centre (SVCC) of the Indian Embassy in Beijing and at Indian consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. S Durga is not for the faint hearted, neither is it for those looking for entertainment. The rest of the cast is made of new faces, but as with the earlier movie, their acting is refreshingly natural.

There is little dialogue for them, and the film belongs to the rowdy men in that sense. Kannan Nair plays Kabeer and Rajshri Deshpande, Durga. Eerily enough, the episode of a woman trapped in a moving car with five men reminds one of the recent real life incident involving a Malayalam actress, though the filmmaker made the movie much before the incident. The filmmaker seems to draw parallels between the religious frenzy involved in Garudan Thookkam, which leaves a group of men doing seemingly illogical actions, and that of a group of drunk men, who again turn insane, after consuming alcohol. In fact, one might wonder, what the title Sexy Durga is all about, for there is no discussion at any point about Goddes Durga or a woman’s sex appeal. In fact, there is hardly a mention of the name Durga in connection with the Goddess, except that a deity fixed in the dashboard of the car is that of Durgadevi. The names of the duo are revealed to be Kabeer and Durga, which again raises eyebrows, but has little effect on the story. The police who stop them are no better, so are random people on the street who think they have every right to question the couple. Instead of a story with a beginning and end, there is a slice of reality, which exposes many things, the deeply entrenched belief that a girl out at night is fair game, being one of them. The film apparently had no formal script, which works in its favour, especially in the banter among the rowdy group of friends.

Not one line is predictable, and the humour is as real life as it can get.

Like the director’s earlier movie, Ozhivudivasathe Kali, the conversations - spontaneous, unpretentious and sharp - are the highlight here too. As their friends join them, they turn more and more boisterous, but the couple realise that they have little choice with the deserted street outside equally dangerous. There is no background story or explanation on why they are there and how and the camera just follows them, like a third person, through the night.Ī car with two men stop finally, but very soon it becomes obvious that the shady looking duo don’t exactly have the couple’s best interests at heart. The film starts off with real life footage of the Garudan Thookkam, depicted in all its goriness, setting the dark tone of the movie, literally and otherwise.Ī couple is seen trying to hitch a ride to the railway station in the dead of the night, obviously eloping.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's much talked about S Durga releases finally after a series of roadblocks. S Durga Review: With spontaneous dialogues and the night as the backdrop, S Durga offers a slice of reality, rather than a formulaic story S Durga Story: A couple, Kabeer and Durga, are trying to elope, and hitch a ride in a car with a group of men, who don’t exactly have their best interests at heart.
